Digitized Movies from the Paul Nyren Collection
Paul Nyren began volunteering with the Friends in 1979 and worked tirelessly for 28 years both on the islands and as a Friends Board member. He filmed countless Friends boat trips and on-island volunteer events. We have had them taken off the film reels and transferred to HD videos. Even without sound, it is a pleasure to see the islands in the 1980s and 1990s.
Paul loved Bumpkin Island where he was an overnight volunteer. He especially enjoyed his acting role as a Navy serviceman who lived on the island during the First World War. Between 1917-1918 there were, ..."over 1,300 sailors stationed here, quartered in 58 buildings."
He lived in Medfield with his wife Mary and would take the Commuter Rail into Boston. He retired from the MBTA and was able to devote countless hours to the Friends. They had a large family and Paul would charter the MV Irene for annual family gatherings always on different islands. Paul served as the Bumpkin Island team captain, the On-Island Program Committee, the Board of Directors and chaired the Nominating Committee.
Enjoy his personal views of the islands and Friends volunteers.
