Spectacle Island Visitor Services
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Spectacle Island Visitor Services
Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area
Spring/Summer/Fall
.
SEEKING:
Volunteers to assist rangers in welcoming visitors to Spectacle Island.
ABOUT THE PARK:
The Boston Harbor Islands national park area (BOHA) includes 34 islands and peninsulas situated within the large "C" shape of the Greater Boston shoreline. The islands are rich in natural and cultural resources, and are managed by a unique, 13-member Partnership. The Boston Harbor Islands Partnership represents a range of federal, state, city, and nonprofit agencies. Visit bostonharborislands.org for more information.
ABOUT SPECTACLE ISLAND: Spectacle Island (105 acres) features a marina, visitor center, cafe, a life-guarded swimming beach, and five miles of walking trails that lead to the crest of a 157 foot-high hill, offering panoramic views of the harbor and the city. Supervised swimming is offered daily from late-June to Labor Day. Spectacle Island is owned jointly by the City of Boston and Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) and managed by DCR.
DUTIES/WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work will consist of assisting rangers at Spectacle Island on specific days and shifts. Specific duties include answering questions from the public and providing verbal and printed information as needed; providing information about programs and events; restocking brochure rack, cleaning windows & furniture, sweeping floors and restocking bathrooms in visitor centers. Specific duties on the dock include providing visitors with clear instructions on how to plan their trip on the park ferry; handing out brochures, and helping manage boat queue. Volunteers may also interpret sea glass display for visitors; help with programming (assemble kites, staff event tables, set up break down); or give general island orientation.
QUALIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Previous experience is not required, but prior customer service training is helpful. Willingness to work as part of a team, with a variety of partners, is essential. Volunteers must be able to commit to a regular schedule. Attendance at one park-held training session is required, additional training will be provided at worksite.
The work is performed primarily at the visitor center or on the dock. In the outdoor setting, volunteers should expect regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts, e.g., high or low temperatures, or adverse weather conditions. Interactions with visitors will be dynamic; rangers and volunteers are not confined to a kiosk, or desk space. The work may involve standing for shifts of up to 4 hours.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Schedule is negotiable, but a minimum commitment of 10 shifts per season (May-October) is required. Attendance at one park-held training session required, date and time to be announced. We welcome help for all shifts, but particularly need in on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Shifts are described below:
Spring (early-May – late-June) and Fall (early-September to Columbus Day)
10:00am – 1:00pm & 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Summer (late-June to Labor Day)
10:00am – 1:00pm & 1:00pm – 5:00 pm
TIME COMMITMENT:
Schedule is negotiable, but a minimum commitment of 2 weekends per season (late-June – early-September) is required. Attendance at one park-held training session required, date and time to be announced. We welcome help on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
